Chesterton/Duneland Chamber of Commerce

Home to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, the Town of Porter has enjoyed a truly diverse history. Beginning with Joseph Bailey’s arrival in 1822 to set up fur trading along the Little Calumet River, railroads, a race track, a mineral spa, and brick factories have all played a part in the ever changing face of the Town. Originating in 1858 the, Town has had many different names (Bailytown, Old Porter, Hageman). In 1908 it was incorporated under the name of Porter. Today, with a population of 4,972, they enjoy a diverse mix of both people and businesses. The old Downtown area boasts several restaurants and quaint residential neighborhood, while the corridor along U.S. Highway 20 is home to several manufacturing and service industries. The Town has seen a great surge in new residential subdivisions, indicating that Porter is a great place to live and raise a family. They are also one of the few communities who still own beachfront property along Lake Michigan. Porter is proud of their park system, including their Millennium Gazebo and Hawthorne Park Community Building, which houses a Senior Citizen Nutrition site during the weekdays, and is available for rentals at night and on weekends. This growing community looks forward to a bright and exciting future while still maintaining their small town feel. Visit the town website at www.townofporter-in.com.
